Here’s a quick guide to how “FAFSA works”

What is FAFSA works?

Everyone who is a college student and their parents should be familiar with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid process (FAFSA works). Many people may be hesitant to apply for financial aid because they don’t have the means. Regardless of family income, they might be eligible for financial aid, whether it is federal, state, school-based, merit-based, or school-based.

It is a good idea for most families with college-bound children to complete the FAFSA works.

FAFSA: How it Works

FAFSA’s primary function is to determine the amount of financial aid a student is eligible for. This includes both need-based as well as non-need-based aid. It determines eligibility to federal need-based grants such as the Pell Grant or Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants, (FSEOG); unsubsidized federal education loans which are based upon need; federal work-study grants; state-based financial assistance, including grants, scholarships and loans; school financial aid, including need grants and scholarships; school-based financial help, including loans, grants, and scholarships; and school-based merit aid (as many schools require that the FAFSA works be filed before aid is distributed).

The FAFSA is a questionnaire that asks questions about income, assets, and other factors to determine the financial needs of a family. The Expected Family Contribution (EFC) is then calculated.

FAFSA is the official application that students and their families use to request financial aid for college from federal government. The information in the application is also used by the states, universities and private scholarship programs.

The FAFSA assumes 20% of the assets of a student and 5.4% of their parents should be available to spend in any given college year. These assets include investments and bank accounts. However, they exclude retirement accounts, life insurance policies and annuities. All equity in the family home are also excluded.

The FAFSA will determine if you are eligible for need-based, non-need-based, or a combination of both.

You don’t have to complete the FAFSA works. However, the Federal Student Aid Estimator at the Department of Education can give you an estimate of your EFC as well as likelihood of getting financial aid.

These are just a few of the programs that you will need to fill out the FAFSA.

Federal Pell Grants

Grants are the most appealing type of financial aid, as they don’t need to be repaid. Pell Grants are the federal grant that is most commonly used for college. They are for students who have “exceptional financial needs.” These grants are mostly for undergraduates but are also available to teachers who are certified through teacher education programs. The maximum award for the 2022-22-23 award year is $6,895 (July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2023). The college’s or university’s financial assistance office determines how much money students are eligible to receive based on the cost of attendance (COA) and their family’s EFC.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants

These grants are not repaid but can only be used at selected schools. These grants range in amount from $100 to $4,000 each year. These supplemental grants, like Pell Grants are for students who have very limited financial resources.

Federal Direct Subsidized Loans

The government will subsidize these credit check loan so that you won’t have to pay interest while you’re in school or for six months after graduation. The amount of subsidized loans you can get ranges from $3,500 to $12,500 each year depending on how long you have been in school and whether or not your status is dependent student or independent student according to the Office of Federal Student Aid. Graduate study is not eligible for these subsidized loans.

Federal Work-Study

Participating colleges and universities can offer part-time, paid jobs through the federal work-study program. Eligible students could be both undergraduate and graduate.

Non-Need-Based Financial Assistance

Direct Unsubsidized Loans

Unsubsidized loans can be similar to subsidized loans, but the government does not pay interest while the student attends school or for the six-month grace period. The interest will be added to principal if the parents or students don’t pay it within the grace period.

These loans can be offered by schools as part of financial aid packages, regardless of the family’s financial situation. Dependent students can receive a maximum amount of $31,000 in unsubsidized loans during their undergraduate years, unless their parents are not eligible for federal PLUS loans. In which case, the limit could be higher.

These grants are available to students who are preparing to teach. They can be up to $4,000 per annum (as of 2021-2022). The grants are not repaid unless the student fails the requirements. In that case, the grant will be converted into an unsubsidized loan.

What is the point of a FAFSA works and what are its benefits?

Is the FAFSA works a loan or free money?

FAFSA is not a loan application. The FAFSA application is a form that you complete to determine your eligibility for a federal loan. After completing the FAFSA, there are three types of financial aid that students may be eligible for. Some of the money can be free, while others must be earned by work and some must repay.
